One of the most meaningful spiritual care experiences I have had was participating in a stone ceremony created and facilitated by Rob Patton during his Chaplain Residency. The ceremony invited participants to reflect on something they needed to release and to symbolize that release by placing a stone into water.

What made the experience so powerful was the safe and nonjudgmental space Rob created. My own beliefs were not imposed upon or challenged; instead, I was free to be authentically present with God and with my own heart. During the ceremony, I became aware of a grief I had been carrying in silence—the loss of a baby through miscarriage not long before. The pregnancy had been unexpected and welcomed, yet I had kept it largely secret out of fear of how others might judge me.

Within the sacred space Rob held, I was able to acknowledge that loss openly. As I placed my stone into the water, I released some of the pain, secrecy, and isolation I had been carrying. I wept, grieved, and began to heal not only from the loss itself but also from the loss of community that had accompanied it.

This experience remains one of the most significant healing rituals I have participated in. It also expanded my understanding of spiritual care as a chaplain. Rob demonstrated how thoughtful ritual, compassionate presence, and respect for individual beliefs can create opportunities for profound healing and transformation while honoring the authenticity of each person's spiritual journey.
